We got an Advent tea calendar from David’s Tea. Due to shipping delays, it came after Christmas…so we have been making some new kind of tea every afternoon between the after school and dinner prep rushes and sitting down for 20 minutes to read, all together. For some people in our family, it’s a homework requirement. The rest of us are being supportive- but it’s easily my favorite moment in the day.
"This stranger / does not give you a new name, just dippers up / the true one you tender in your chest." Augh! Such gorgeous words.
My new schtick this winter is LED candles. My sweet husband struggles with chronic headaches and is very sensitive to both scents and candle smoke, but I really missed the ambience of candle light. I picked up a few tapered ones and wooden candlestick holders, some tealights, and a stubby one and they make such a huge difference in our family room. The cozy lofi and fireplace streams have made regular appearances on the family room TV as well. ☺️
Isn't that poem incredible? I'm not over it in the least. What a great idea re LED candles too! There's something about that ambiance of flickering light (and I'm sometimes paranoid about leaving the real ones burning, especially since we still have a few littles around).
I can’t wait to hear The Porter’s Gate and read Sea of Tranquility. Let’s see… my winter hygge is oatmeal, doubled-up blankets, and journalling. Even if it’s just copying prayers or scriptures.
Ooh, I haven't read Sea of Tranquility but I loved The Glass Hotel! I hope the ending is everything you want it to be! I am alternating between Lucy Worsley's Jane Austen at Home (delightful) and The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles.
Recipe from our frozen house this week - Pioneer Woman's tomato soup with grilled cheese. This recipe makes a ton (helpful for those of us who feed a crowd like you and I!) and my husband has discovered a hack for making grilled cheese faster than in a skillet - use the oven! Butter a bunch of bread slices, top with cheese of your choice, place in a 350 oven until the cheese melts (4-6 minutes? Depending on the cheese mostly) Place another slice of buttered bread on top and flip (don't skip the flip! Very important for toasting the second slice!), bake another 4ish minutes, et voila! Grilled cheeses by the dozen! Bon Appétit! https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/recipes/a11985/tomato-soup-with-parmesan-croutons/
I just got The Glass Hotel from the library yesterday, and I had no idea Sea of Tranquility included some of the same characters! Now I am even more intrigued (even though I'll be reading them backwards, ha). The ending was even better than I expected. Would love to know what you think if you pick it up. Thank you for the soup/grilled cheese recipes, too! These sound amazing.

Oh, I love this idea so much. What a beautiful pause - you've inspired me to try the same, since we need a reboot for our pre-dinner hour!

Oh I love this comfort combo. Hygge at its finest!
Sending all the encouragement through this cold, dark season. Highly recommend this rich, flavorful soup. Ginger gives a pretty decent kick, but overall not too much for my little guys. ❤️https://suebeehomemaker.com/anti-inflammatory-chicken-ginger-soup/#recipe
Thank you so much for this! We have some chicken noodle soup lovers in this house, so I love the idea of nudging their palates just a touch.
