I recently deleted my Instagram profile entirely. Wonder of wonders, I now have more focus and read more books! I don't know if I'll ever go back to any social media without massive changes in the industry.
I'm giving up consumerism for Lent! (Just something small this year, I know. Ha!) Aside from gifts for others, our family is committed to not buying anything unless it's truly a need.
I didn't know On Being was back!!! Hooray! I don't have a hard time putting my phone down when I'm just using it for fun, but when I "have" to be on for work I struggle. I've been thinking a lot about the difference between marketing (inviting people to do something) and codependency (needing to control people). No real conclusions yet!
Oof, this is a wide distinction. I too struggle with the difference between the phone/social media use I need to do for work and the times I use it for fun/distraction. Really want to get better boundaries around these two areas.
Last year I quit using social media and found hours I didn’t know I had, which I’ve used to read meaningful content on Substack as well as publish my own words here.
Reading others’ comments about Amazon/consumerism hits a nerve that was already tingling. I think I will make a concerted effort to do the same this year as I have some financial goals I’m working toward that seem to get derailed by unnecessary purchases (mostly Amazon & eating out!).

Whew, good for you on both accounts! This is inspiring - thanks for sharing.
Your article came at the perfect time. I was just discussing with a friend about why people who grew up in the faith may sometimes leave.
Giving up Amazon for Lent. And other superfluous online shopping and spending. I so wish I could toss the smartphone, but my boss would not approve.
Love this idea of giving up Amazon for Lent - that's a great one!
Oh the technology question!! Always on my mind. Thanks for the great newsletter and I’m grateful you shared our book. Thank you!!
It just arrived in the mail this weekend - so beautiful!
Oh wow! It’s becoming very real! So glad to call you friend!
