Here's a practical resource that sparked my Sabbath pondering years ago: Sabbath in the Suburbs: A Family's Experiment with Holy Time. https://amzn.to/3AoEjA7
I love this so much! I was just thinking about how I need an entire month of sabbath to recover from my year. (Thank goodness I work in a school where a summer break is actually possible...and that my kids are old enough to be self-sufficient.)
Here we are, entering July, and after a month of languishing, I finally feel able to reconnect with purpose and goals and a peek into the future.
I'd like to think that honoring a weekly Sabbath will shorten my June spent on the couch reading (just like your kids), and I will most certainly give it a try come August, but for now, I'm so grateful for my entire month of Sabbath days in June. They reconnect me to God, to myself, to my family, and to who I truly am.
Looking forward to delving into your recommendations!
Sabbath as reconnection - I love how you phrase this. The time and place of our returning regularly back to God - and also peek into the future! Thank you for this; lots to dwell on here.
Another I'm loving lately is the Artist/Mother Podcast. Here's a fascinating episode that speaks to rhythms of rest (I also adore & admire that their organization is taking a month-long Sabbath in July): https://artistmotherpodcast.com/podcast/98-grounding-ourselves-in-rhythms-of-rest-and-nourishing-our-inner-selves-with-mira-burack/
On the secular side, I am fascinated by Tiffany Shlain's practice of “Tech Shabbat." Here she is with Krista Tippett on the "Living the Questions" podcast: https://onbeing.org/programs/living-the-questions-weve-been-enmeshed-with-our-technologies-tech-shabbat-for-everyone/

A theological classic on sabbath. If you haven't read Abraham Heschel, run, don't walk. (Or stroll? Saunter? Sabbath pace.) https://amzn.to/3AnEs6Q
