A Mood for May

After this wild week, who doesn’t need a few good reads?

Let’s start with this poem: “The Empty Tomb” by Tania Runyan, from A Thousand Vessels (which one of you recommended to me).

This week the U.S. passed the pandemic milestone of 1-million mortalities. Pause to reflect with this sea of white flags honoring those lost to Covid.

Did you hear that the world’s oldest person died recently at the age of 119? Courtney Martin’s essay on the geologic consciousness of generations is a fascinating read.

Loved this reflection from Neil Fulton on the spiritual practice of sitting in the front row and watching people receive communion.

I bought myself two prints from Kelly Latimore Icons for Mother’s Day (including Christ the Mother Hen). If you don’t know his work, read more here.

Speaking of art, this gorgeous print of Dorothy Day from Daniela M. is a whole mood. I am here for all of it and now summon her to mind whenever I sign on Twitter.

I spy a few Mother’s Day essays from years past at We Are ND, including the story of the group text that’s been saving my life since college.

Came across this article from Patty Breen on how boredom can lead to your most brilliant ideas. Carrying it with me into this spring of sideline-sitting at kids’ sports.

I’m heading to Nashville this week to collaborate on a new project with The Porter’s Gate, and I get to hang out with Kayla Craig of Liturgies for Parents—who just launched a new podcast for parents!

My latest column for Catholic News Service on our need for resurrection stories is here as an editor’s choice. But I was shocked to learn that the U.S. bishops will be shutting down domestic operations for CNS. Learn more here and contact your local bishop?

Can I confess that St. Thérèse of Lisieux has never been…my favorite? But since we’re headed to her home in October on our pilgrimage to France, I’m determined to get to know her. A friend swears by this book, so I’m diving in: The Love That Keeps Us Sane.

Speaking of the pilgrimage, check out our new itinerary here and join us for a free virtual info session on May 18th. Reply to this email and I’ll send the details.

I’m obligated by thrifter’s delight to leave you with this story: Goodwill Sold a Bust for $34.99. It’s an Ancient Roman Relic.

Finally, even in the current dumpster fire of our civic discourse, it’s still Easter. Here are a few ideas to keep alive the season of resurrection, which we need more than ever. Feel free to share with someone who might need renewed hope?
